Why This Position Exists
The Guard, Facilities – Security position protects Las Vegas Motor Speedway's 1,200-acre property and the teammates, fans, clients, and contractors who work and gather there. Working continuously across a 24/7 operation, the Guard secures perimeter access points, executes assigned patrol routes, responds to incidents on property, and serves as the first point of contact for anyone who needs assistance after hours. The position serves every other function at LVMS by sustaining the safe, secure environment that makes their work possible.
Without this position, LVMS cannot maintain continuous coverage across 1,200 acres. Gates and access points would close at end of business with no controlled re-entry for teammates and clients who need it. Incidents would go unwitnessed and unreported, creating both safety exposure and liability gaps. Event setup and teardown would proceed without security oversight of valuable equipment, inventory, and infrastructure. And other teammates would be pulled from their work to handle access requests, lockouts, and incident response — capacity LVMS cannot afford to redirect from the work each function exists to do.
Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibility 1: Property Access and Perimeter Control
The Guard manages controlled access to LVMS property — opening and closing parking lots, entrance gates, office doors, garage doors, and pedestrian gates at the times specified for each shift. The Guard verifies the credentials of teammates, clients, and contractors requesting access during off-hours and serves as the point of contact for all entry requests when no other authorized teammate is on property.
In this area, this position:
- Decides Whether to grant or deny access based on posted access rules and credential verification; routine timing within the shift's open and close schedule.
- Escalates Access requests outside posted rules, unverified credentials, suspicious activity at access points, or any access dispute to the team leader.
Measurable Outcomes:
- All assigned gates and doors are secured at scheduled lockup times and opened at scheduled unlock times with no unauthorized entries during the shift.
- Every off-hours access request is verified against posted access rules before entry is granted.
- Access logs are completed for the shift with arrival and departure times for every after-hours entry.
Key Responsibility 2: Property Patrol and Coverage
The Guard executes the assigned patrol route for the shift — driving or walking each location on the route, observing conditions, and logging movements with arrival and departure times. The Guard rotates through four property routes as assigned and adjusts coverage in real time to address conditions on the ground.
In this area, this position:
- Decides Pace and sequence within the assigned route; routine response to minor conditions encountered during patrol within posted protocols.
- Escalates Route deviations beyond posted protocols, observed safety hazards, suspicious persons or activity, or any condition outside the Guard's authority to address to the team leader.
Measurable Outcomes:
- Every location on the assigned route is visited each shift with arrival and departure times logged.
- Observations requiring follow-up are documented in the shift log and routed to the appropriate team leader before end of shift.
- Route coverage is uninterrupted during the shift; any gap is flagged in real time to the team leader.
Key Responsibility 3: Incident Response and Reporting
The Guard is the first responder to incidents that occur on property during the shift — arriving on scene, assessing the situation, gathering information and statements from witnesses, and coordinating with onsite medical, law enforcement, and other functions as the incident requires. The Guard files a written incident report with all relevant information for review and follow-up.
In this area, this position:
- Decides Initial scene actions within posted protocols (securing the area, calling for medical or law enforcement, gathering witness information); content of the written incident report.
- Escalates Incidents involving injury, property damage, criminal activity, or disputed accounts to the team leader, with onsite medical and law enforcement notified per protocol.
Measurable Outcomes:
- Every incident on shift is responded to within posted response time standards.
- Written incident reports are filed before end of shift with witness statements, scene description, and actions taken.
- Onsite medical and law enforcement are notified per protocol when the incident type requires it.
Key Responsibility 4: Equipment Stewardship
The Guard maintains in good working order the equipment assigned for the shift — including but not limited to LVMS security vehicles, hand-held radios, iPads, and any keys or access devices issued. The Guard inspects assigned equipment at the start of each shift, reports issues immediately, and returns equipment in working condition at the end of each shift.
In this area, this position:
- Decides Routine equipment use within posted protocols; whether equipment is fit for shift use based on the start-of-shift inspection.
- Escalates Equipment damage, malfunctions, missing items, or any condition that compromises shift readiness to the team leader.
Measurable Outcomes:
- Start-of-shift equipment inspection is completed and logged for every shift.
- Equipment issues are reported to the team leader within the shift in which they are discovered.
- Assigned equipment is returned at end of shift in the condition it was issued.
Key Responsibility 5: Shift Discipline and Handoff
The Guard arrives prepared for the shift, reviews the previous shift's notes before reporting to assignment, executes the shift in alignment with posted protocols, and provides written handoff to the next shift covering ongoing situations, incidents, and any conditions requiring follow-up. Sustained, continuous coverage of the assigned route is the responsibility of the Guard on duty.
In this area, this position:
- Decides Personal preparation, review of prior shift notes before reporting, and content of handoff documentation to the next shift.
- Escalates Inability to start shift on time, unresolved situations carried from the prior shift, or any condition that compromises shift coverage to the team leader.
Measurable Outcomes:
- Shift starts on time with prior shift notes reviewed before reporting to assignment.
- Handoff documentation is completed before end of shift covering incidents, ongoing situations, and follow-up items.
- Shift coverage is uninterrupted; any gap is communicated to the team leader in real time.
Our Traits in This Position
Our three Traits — Humble, Driven, and Connected — are the characteristics that successful teammates share in common. The descriptions below are how each Trait shows up specifically in this position.
Humble. A Guard hears more concerns than complaints — teammates locked out, fans confused about parking, contractors needing access. The right Guard treats every interaction with respect, regardless of the requester's tone or position. A Guard does not need to win the encounter; a Guard needs to keep the property and the people on it safe and to make the requester feel seen. Humility shows up in tone, posture, and the willingness to ask How can I help? before assuming the worst.
Driven. Security work is repetitive by design — the same routes, the same checks, the same logs, shift after shift. The right Guard does not let the routine erode the standard. Driven shows up as on-time arrivals, complete logs, thorough patrols, and incident reports written with the same care on a quiet shift as on a busy one. The drive to do the work right when nothing is happening is what makes the work right when something does.
Connected. A Guard does not work alone, even when patrolling alone. The right Guard stays in communication with the rest of the security team, with onsite medical, with law enforcement when needed, and with the next shift through handoff documentation. Connected shows up as a Guard who shares observations early, asks for help when conditions exceed posted protocols, and treats the next shift's success as part of this shift's responsibility.
How This Position Supports Our Mission
Speedway Motorsports exists to Exceed Expectations — for our fans, our clients, our partners, our communities, and each other. This position connects to all four of our Principles.
Care for Teammates. A Guard creates the safe working environment that makes every other teammate's work possible. When a teammate is locked out at 2 AM, the Guard answers. When an incident occurs on property, the Guard responds. The position is, fundamentally, Care for Teammates expressed through presence and protection.
Be Remarkable. For many fans, clients, and contractors, the Guard at the gate is the first teammate they encounter on property — and sometimes the last. The right Guard creates an impression worth remarking on: alert, respectful, helpful. Being Remarkable in this position means turning a control point into a welcome.
Impact Community. A Guard is the LVMS face for first responders, neighboring properties, and law enforcement partners. The Guard's professionalism shapes how those partners see LVMS as a neighbor and a community member. A Guard who coordinates well with outside agencies impacts how the surrounding community sees Speedway Motorsports.
Continuously Improve. A Guard sees the property in ways no other teammate does — at 3 AM, during storms, when a gate is jammed, when a posted procedure does not match the conditions on the ground. The right Guard surfaces what they see — through shift logs, incident reports, and direct conversations with the team leader — so the standard can be raised. Continuously Improve in this position means the Guard does not just execute the protocol; the Guard contributes to making it better.
